Parents
Dear Parents:
No doubt, you’ve had many conversations with your young adult and have heard the many joys and challenges they encounter on campus. Your encouragement and support is an important key to their success. Please encourage them to e-mail or call our office if they are having issues on campus such as difficult classes, needing a tutor, roommate conflicts, etc.
Being a Daniels Scholar comes with high expectations and specific requirements. Hopefully your scholar has taken a copy of the Daniels Scholarship Requirements Handbook with them to school, and left one with you as a resource at home. The handbook provides most of the information you and Scholars need regarding our requirements, deadlines, expectations and how to reach us. Following are some specific reminders and upcoming deadlines:
- Please remind your Scholar to check their dfscholars.org e-mail account frequently, and to refer to their Daniels Scholarship Requirements Handbook for policies and procedures.
- Scholars are required to send us their mailing address at school as well as any new phone numbers where we can reach them by September 15. Would you please make sure they’ve taken care of this requirement? At the same time, if you’ve had a change in your contact information we would appreciate receiving that information as well.
- We want to remind you to remind your Daniels Scholar that their Personal Evaluation is due to us by January 8th, 2010.
Another upcoming deadline for them to keep in mind is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline, which is February 28, 2010. They can access the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ . They will not need to send a copy of their FAFSA, however, we will need a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) as part of their renewal packet
- It is very important for your Scholar to be aware of the priority funding deadline at their college. If they do not already know their priority funding deadline, they can learn that date by calling their Financial Aid Office. They must submit their FAFSA and submit all required documents to their Financial Aid Office in time to meet that priority funding deadline. Daniels Fund will not pay the amount of funding that they may lose as a result of missing the priority funding deadline at their college.
- Scholarship Renewal Process: In an effort to better support our Daniels Scholars and decrease the number of deadlines throughout the year, we have established an annual Scholarship Renewal Process. In the past, we have requested that Daniels Scholars submit a number of required documents throughout the year. With the new Scholarship Renewal Process they are required to submit the same documents as before, but now you will submit them in one packet between May 1st and June 30th.
We hope that your scholar has a wonderful upcoming term, and we are here to answer any questions for them as they arise. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please contact any of the Scholar Relations Officers at 303-393-7220 or 877-868-1212 (toll free).
