Scholar Mentoring Program Kicks Off
Community Leaders Serve as Mentors for Daniels Scholars

Thursday, December 24, 2009

The Daniels Scholar Career Mentoring Program kicked off this fall as a pilot program.  Eight mentors and sixteen fourth year Daniels Scholars began meeting in small groups with the goals of learning how their respective professions are practiced, fine tuning career goals and enhancing professional networks.

Yuri Hong, a senior vocal performance student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, was matched with Pelham G. Pearce, the General Director of the Central City Opera.  During her first activity, Yuri was able to sit with Mr. Pearce during Central City Opera's national auditions.  She received valuable insight into how the audition process works and what the judges look for as they listen to auditioning vocalists.

Erikka Garrett, a senior Criminal Justice major at the University of Colorado at Denver, wants to become a detective.  The Daniels Fund has a long history with retired detective Lori Moriarty.  She works for the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children and is directly involved with numerous substance abuse related projects funded by the Daniels Fund.  Mrs. Moriarty is setting up a ride along in a cop car, a meeting with an undercover narcotics unit and is helping Erikka to determine what direction she wants to pursue within the Criminal Justice field.

Throughout the year, the Scholarship Program will be evaluating this pilot program and making changes based on feedback from the participants.  This feedback will help to guide the gradual expansion of the program so that more Scholars can benefit in the future.
